The Tanabata Kamishibai Art Contest

Two literally star-crossed lovers divided by the river of the Milky Way.  Destined to meet only on the seventh day of the seventh month of the year. This is the legend at the very center of the Tanabata Festival held  every year in Japan.  Colorful streamers and lanterns hang about the malls and shopping districts announcing the arrival of the Star Festival!  So during this wondrous event the Kamishibai community is holding a month long competition for all the artists out there!   It'll take a keen imaginative mind to win that cash prize so give it your all!

Criteria

Tanabata, or the Star Festival, has come to be a holiday about wish fulfillment.  It is also tied in with the commercial industry.  This year we plan to focus on the commercial side of the festival.  What you're required to do is take any Kamishibai series or one shot found on our masterlist and create some kind of image from on of these categories:

<>A Publicity Poster - Make a poster advertising the series or one shot as you would see in a movie theatre or in one of those music stores.

<>A Book Cover - Make a image as you would find on a book in a bookstore.

<>CD Cover - Choosing this one will get you judged the hardest.  Make a CD cover for the series as if you needed a cover for its soundtrack.

<>Comic Book Cover - This one is probably the most fun to do.  Take one installment of the series (if it has only one episode that's fine) and make a typical American style comic book cover for it.

And those are the available things to do!  Or at least giving you an idea of what kind of images we're looking for.  Easy right?  And remember we're not looking for you to do everything anime style, use your own style, this is about your creative vision coming out on top.  Not what we think you're creative vision should be.  Seriously.

MASTER LIST

Rules

Planning on entering?  Well there are some rules that you gotta follow and some rights that you have to be aware of, so let's get those out of the way.

<> Try not to make images larger than 800x600 pixels (Which is the standard size for a sheet of notebook paper).  If it is larger than that just keep in mind we aren't looking for frescoes or anything. Use your judgement.

<>Images should be in either jpg, gif, or bmp, format.  We understand there are alot of other formats out there but we need to be sure they're postable.

<>We plan to post the entries on the "Kamishibai Sanctuary" website.  If you don't wish to have yours posted just add a little note about it when you submit your entry.

<>The images belong to you.  You have the ownership, and we won't do anything with them without your permission (meaning we won't be using your ads as ads.  It's meant to be a kind of Pop art imitating pop art I guess)

<>There is no limit to the amount of entries you can submit.  Inspiration is inspiration so try your luck.

<>If you have a Kami that you have read but it's not on the Master List just contact that author and have them email you back giving you permission.  Then forward that email to us so we know its admissible.

<> Entries must be based on a Kamishibai.  We all love Batman and Godzilla but they have their own commercial artwork -_- (Well I love Batman anyway...he's a hotty)

<>There must be at least 5 entries for the contest to take place.

<>If you're already a Kamishibai maker and currently have a Kami series you MAY NOT do things from your own Kami series.  It has to be from someone else's work.

<>This isn't required but if you do enter please post a link to the contest somewhere so more people can get involved.  No point in having a contest when you have no competition right?

<>Any questions?  Contact Red at: RedValkyrie19@aol.com

Judging

Once again, we're not interested in how anime you can get or how American your work can look.  We'll be judging you on creative vision.  Did it look like you put effort into it or that you just slopped something together?  How close to the series does this fit?  Is it an enticing image?  Would it make us want the product?  Yeah, okay so there is NO real product but...hey this is sort of pop art.  Is there really EVER a product to sell in pop art?
